We offer violin, viola, and cello lessons at our school, perfect for students of all ages and skill levels. With parental support, children as young as 4 or 5 can begin New Fairfield violin lessons, even if the parent doesn’t play an instrument. Our teachers provide guidance on proper posture, positioning, and at-home practice, ensuring a successful start. Older students, aged 6 and up, can typically practice more independently, though parental encouragement is always helpful.
The viola, similar to the violin, plays a lower range of notes, while the cello is a larger instrument with even deeper tones. Many of our string students participate in school orchestras or audition for community ensembles to enhance their skills. Advanced students can also explore group performance opportunities offered at the Music Learning Center. Whether it’s violin, viola, or cello, our lessons help students grow their passion and skills for a lifetime of music-making!
How do I find the right string instrument?
Younger students will begin with a smaller-size violin, viola, or cello and then exchange it for each subsequent larger size when they are ready. Most students will not need a “full-size” string instrument until they are in either middle school or high school. Because of that, it is always better to rent a string instrument first. There is no set answer of how long it takes, but with regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long-term basis because they want to be constantly improving, and they find the lessons enjoyable.
Yes. Even if you don’t have a musical background, you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are playing the songs and exercises a certain number of times each day, you can help your child achieve steady progress. Many parents will sit in on their child’s lessons on occasion in order to have a better idea of the way a song should sound, or how the student should maintain the correct posture while playing. Though it’s not required, our teachers can help parents be involved with their child’s learning to whatever extent that they are able. Helping the student achieve independence with their at home practice is one of the keys to long term progress.
